Chamonix-Mont Blanc, France

Whew! I just got back from a 4 day trip to Geneva. Well actually, my Boss had business in Geneva and I was able to sneak away for 2 days of skiing in Chamonix. After much searching on Booking.com, I opted for the Mercure Chamonix Centre. As the name says, it’s located right in the heart of the town of Chamonix-Mont Blanc, with amazing views of the surrounding mountains. The highlight being Mont Blanc. Mont Blanc or Monte Bianco as the Italians call it, is 15,781 feet high (4,810 meters) and is quite impressive by any standards. The town of Chamonix-Mont Blanc is located right outside the entrance to the Mont Blanc Tunnel. This 7.2 mileĀ tunnel allows for an easy way to get from Chamonix, Haute-Savoie, France to Courmayer, Aosta Valley, Italy. I’ve had the opportunity to drive through the tunnel at least 6 times and have loved it every time.

11483179The first day of skiing was quite difficult because it was cold, windy, icy and generally a miserable day. That didn’t stop me though and although it took a lot more effort than usual, I still enjoyed it. The second day was spectacular! The sun shone brightly, the weather was clear and the skiing FANTASTIC!

The Mercure was much better than the one I stayed in during Christmas in Courchevel, but it wasn’t ski-in ski-out like in Courchevel, so we had to drive to the lifts. No worries though, Chamonix is spread out a bit, but we were located right in the heart of the action. Only a short walk to the ‘main drag’ where there were bars, restaurants, shops and pretty much all the things one needs for a great ski vacation.

This was my second trip to ski in Chamonix. Last year in March I got 2 days in as well. Last year the weather and skiing was better, but I had a bad cold and that put a little damper on things.

Overall, a bad day skiing is better than a good day working, so I had a great time and will definitely come back. I suggest you give Chamonix-Mont Blanc a try to. Unlike Courchevel, it’s open year-round and boasts activities for all ages. Safe travels!
